The Science of Time: Calendars & Systems
ISO 8601 Standard
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) regulates 8601, the global standard for date and time data exchange. According to this standard, Monday is officially the first day of the week. This system ensures consistency across international banking, logistics, and scientific research.
The Gregorian Calendar
Named after Pope Gregory XIII, this solar calendar was introduced in 1582. It refined the previous Julian calendar to more accurately reflect the time it takes for the Earth to orbit the Sun, correcting a 0.002% error that had shifted the seasons by 10 days over centuries.
Celestial Origins
The names of our days are deeply rooted in ancient Roman mythology and the Hellenistic period. Each day was traditionally dedicated to one of the seven "wandering stars" visible to the naked eye:
Sunday
Named after Sol, the Roman Sun god.
Monday
Named after Luna, the divine embodiment of the moon.
Tuesday
Dedicated to Mars, the god of war.
This linguistic heritage persists globally. In Japanese, Tuesday is Ka-youbi (Fire-day, linked to Mars), while in India, Thursday is Guruvara, named after Jupiter (the Guru to the gods).
Calculating the Day: Zeller's Congruence
While modern computers use internal timestamps, the mathematical formula used for manual calculation is Zeller's Congruence. Developed by Christian Zeller, it is an algorithm that provides the day of the week for any date in the Julian or Gregorian calendars. It considers the year, month, and day while treating January and February as months 13 and 14 of the previous year to simplify the leap-year logic.
