Choosing a Fair Split

An equal split is simple but ignores that one bedroom may be twice the size of another. Splitting purely by room size can overcharge the big room for kitchen and living space everyone shares. The mixed method fixes this: a share of the rent, often 30-50%, covers common areas and is split equally, and the rest follows bedroom size. Example: 2,400 with 40% common and rooms of 14, 11 and 9 m² gives 912.94, 785.88 and 701.18.

Splitting by income suits couples or friends with very different earnings, so everyone spends a similar share of what they make. Other features such as a private bathroom, a balcony or better light can be reflected by adjusting the room sizes you enter. Whatever you choose, agree on it up front.

Key Takeaways

  • Mixed method: Share common space equally and bedrooms by size.
  • Exact to the cent: No one pays a rounding error.
  • Agree first: Pick the method together before signing the lease.
