Reading Military Time
Military time counts the hours of the day from 00 to 23 and writes them as four digits with no colon: 0900 is 9 AM and 1430 is 2:30 PM, read "fourteen thirty hours". To convert an afternoon time, add 12 to the hour; to convert back, subtract 12 from any hour of 13 or more. The two special cases are midnight, 12:00 AM = 0000, and noon, 12:00 PM = 1200.
Some services also write 2400 for the very end of a day, so a shift can run "0800 to 2400"; it is the same moment as 0000 the next morning. Most of the world simply calls this format the 24-hour clock and writes it with a colon, as in 14:30.
Key Takeaways
- Add 12 after noon: 1 PM is 1300, 11 PM is 2300.
- Midnight is 0000: 12 AM is the start of the day, 0000.
- No colon: Military time is written as four digits, often followed by "hours".
