Why the Large Is Usually the Deal
A pizza's area grows with the square of its diameter: area = π × (diameter / 2)2. A 16-inch pizza is only a third wider than a 12-inch one, but it has 78% more pizza (201 vs 113 square inches). So if a 12-inch costs 12 and a 16-inch costs 18, the larger one is cheaper per bite: about 0.090 versus 0.106 per square inch.
Two caveats: a larger pizza has relatively less crust, which some people see as a bonus and others as a loss; and value only matters if you will actually eat it. The calculator treats every pizza as a perfect circle, so very thick or square pizzas need a little judgement.
Key Takeaways
- Square of the diameter: Doubling the diameter gives four times the pizza.
- Compare per area: Price per square inch or 100 cm² is the fair measure.
- Any currency: Prices are plain numbers, so use your own currency.
