In more detail

Key rules: aᵐ × aⁿ = aᵐ⁺ⁿ, a⁰ = 1 and a⁻ⁿ = 1/aⁿ. A fractional exponent is a root: 27^(1/3) = 3. Powers of two give 2¹⁰ = 1,024.
