File Checksum Calculator - MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-512 & CRC-32
File Checksum Calculator
Verify downloads and compare files without uploading them
Check a Download
Paste the checksum the publisher lists and see immediately whether your file matches it.
Many Files at Once
Drop a whole batch and get every checksum. Copy them in the sha256sum text format.
Six Algorithms
MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384, SHA-512 and CRC-32, and you choose which ones to compute.
Full Privacy
Files are read by your browser and never uploaded anywhere.
Why Verify a Checksum
A checksum is a short fingerprint of a file's contents: change a single byte and it changes completely. Software projects publish the checksum of each download so you can confirm your copy is complete and untampered. Calculate it here, compare it with the published value, and if they differ, download the file again from a trusted source.
Prefer SHA-256 or stronger. MD5 and SHA-1 still catch accidental corruption but are broken against a deliberate attacker, and CRC-32 is only an error-detecting code. A matching checksum proves the file is the one whose checksum was published, so get that checksum from a different, trusted place than the file itself. Files up to 1 GB are supported.
Key Takeaways
- Any format: Paste a bare hash, a sha256sum line or a BSD-style line, in any case.
- Up to 1 GB: Larger files exceed what a browser can hold in memory.
- Related tools: For text digests use the Hash Generator; for keyed signatures use the HMAC Generator.
