The Full IEEE Registry

Covers the 24-bit (MA-L), 28-bit (MA-M) and 36-bit (MA-S) assignments, so small blocks resolve to the right company.

Bulk Lookups

Paste up to 50 addresses in any mix of formats and copy the results as a table for a spreadsheet.

Spots Random Addresses

Phones and laptops often use a made-up address for privacy; the tool tells you when that is why nothing was found.

Only the Prefix Matters

The vendor comes from the first 6 to 9 digits, so you can paste just an OUI and not a full device address.

How a MAC Address Names Its Maker

A MAC address is 48 bits, usually written as six pairs of hex digits. The IEEE Registration Authority sells blocks of addresses to manufacturers: a 24-bit prefix, called an OUI, for large blocks, and longer 28-bit and 36-bit prefixes for smaller ones. Everything after the prefix is the maker's own serial numbering, so the prefix identifies the company that bought the block, not the model of the device.

Two bits in the first byte carry meaning of their own. If the second-lowest bit is set, the address is locally administered: it was made up by software rather than assigned at the factory, as phones and operating systems do to stop tracking, and virtual machines and containers do by default. Such addresses are not in the registry, so an empty result for one is expected. A vendor name also says little about the current device: cards are resold, chips are reused, and addresses can be changed by the user.
