What a Sitemap Is For
A sitemap is an XML file that lists the pages you want search engines to find. It does not make pages rank higher, but it helps crawlers discover new or poorly linked pages and learn when they changed. Put the file at the root of your site, for example https://example.com/sitemap.xml, and point to it from robots.txt with a Sitemap: line or submit it in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
Each URL needs a loc, the full address. The optional lastmod is the date the page really last changed; Google uses it only when it is consistently accurate, so leave it out rather than set every page to today. Google ignores changefreq and priority, but other crawlers still read them. Special characters such as & must be escaped in XML, and non-ASCII characters in paths are written as percent-escapes, both of which the tool does for you.
Key Takeaways
- Limits: One sitemap file may hold at most 50,000 URLs and 50 MB uncompressed. Bigger sites use a sitemap index.
- One host per sitemap: A sitemap may only list URLs on the same host (and protocol) it is served from.
- Related tools: Use the Sitemap XML Validator to check an existing file and the robots.txt Generator to point crawlers at it.
