How Dividend Growth Builds Up
Dividend yield is the annual dividend divided by the share price: $2 on a $50 share is 4%. When a company raises its dividend each year, income grows even if you never buy another share, and yield on cost, the current dividend divided by what you originally paid, rises with it. Reinvesting dividends buys more shares, which then pay their own dividends, so income compounds.
This is a projection built on the growth rates you enter; real dividends can be cut or suspended and prices can fall. To keep it simple, dividends are paid evenly across the year, growth steps up once a year, and reinvestment buys fractional shares at that year's price. Taxes and fees are not included.
Key Takeaways
- Transparent model: The assumptions are stated, and checked against an independent simulation.
- Cash or shares: Compare taking dividends as cash with reinvesting them.
- Not advice: Projections are illustrations, not predictions.
