Markup Calculator - Markup, Margin, Cost, Price & Profit
Markup Calculator
Enter any two of cost, price, profit, markup or margin and get the rest
Any Two Values
Give any two of cost, price, profit, markup and margin and the other three are calculated.
Markup vs Margin
See both percentages at once, so you never confuse profit as a share of cost with profit as a share of price.
For Pricing
Work forwards from cost and a target markup to a price, or backwards from a price to the margin you actually earn.

Markup Is Not Margin
Markup is profit divided by cost; margin is profit divided by price. Selling something that costs $50 for $70 is a $20 profit, a 40% markup and a 28.57% margin. Because the price is larger than the cost, margin is always smaller than markup. A 50% markup is only a 33.3% margin, and a 100% markup is a 50% margin.
Mixing them up is a classic pricing mistake: a business that wants a 40% margin and simply adds 40% to cost ends up with a margin of only 28.57%. To reach a target margin m, price = cost ÷ (1 − m). This calculator does the conversion for you, and it flags impossible inputs such as a margin of 100% or more.
Key Takeaways
- Both percentages: Markup and margin are always shown together.
- Losses too: A price below cost gives a negative profit, markup and margin.
- Guarded inputs: Impossible or underdetermined combinations are explained.
