Understanding Blood Pressure Categories
A blood pressure reading has two numbers: systolic (pressure while the heart beats) over diastolic (pressure while it rests between beats). The American Heart Association groups readings into five categories, based on whichever number falls into the more severe range.
AHA Blood Pressure Categories
| Category | Systolic (mmHg) | Diastolic (mmHg) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Normal | Below 120 | and | Below 80 |
| Elevated | 120–129 | and | Below 80 |
| Hypertension Stage 1 | 130–139 | or | 80–89 |
| Hypertension Stage 2 | 140 or higher | or | 90 or higher |
| Hypertensive Crisis | Above 180 | and/or | Above 120 |
Whichever Number Is Worse Wins
If either your systolic or diastolic number falls into a higher category, that's your category -- even if the other number is normal.
One Reading Isn't Enough
Blood pressure fluctuates throughout the day -- a diagnosis of hypertension is based on the average of multiple readings, not a single measurement.
Crisis Needs Immediate Attention
A reading above 180/120 is a hypertensive crisis -- seek medical care right away, especially with symptoms like chest pain or vision changes.
Not a Diagnosis
This tool classifies a single reading against published thresholds -- it does not replace a clinical evaluation.
Key Takeaways
- Measure Correctly: Sit quietly for 5 minutes with your back supported and feet flat before measuring.
- Track Over Time: Log readings across several days at the same time of day for a more reliable picture.
- Talk to a Doctor: Any category above Normal is worth discussing with a healthcare provider.
