How old is your cat in human years?
Cat Years to Human Years
Uses the chart vets and breeders commonly quote: 15 for the first year, 24 for the second, then 4 for every year.
Life Stages
Shows whether your cat is a kitten, junior, prime, mature, senior or geriatric cat, with what that means for care.
Months Count Too
Enter months for kittens and in-between ages: the first year is not spread out evenly.

How Cats Age
Cats do not age at a steady rate. In their first year they grow from a newborn to something close to an adult, which is why a one-year-old cat is compared to a 15-year-old person. The second year takes them to about 24, and after that each calendar year is worth about four human years. A ten-year-old cat is therefore about 56, and a twenty-year-old cat about 96.
The comparison is only a guide. Indoor cats tend to live longer than outdoor cats, many reach their late teens, and breed, weight, diet and health all matter. The life stages are more useful than the human number for planning care: kittens need vaccinations and neutering, adults need yearly checks, and seniors benefit from check-ups twice a year, with attention to weight, teeth, kidneys and thyroid function.
Key Takeaways
- Not 7 to 1: The old "multiply by seven" rule does not fit cats. Early years count for much more than later ones.
- Ask your vet: Your veterinarian can judge your own cat’s health and life stage.
