Posts and Sections

Count the sections your run needs at your chosen spacing, and the posts to carry them, with an extra post for each gate.

Pickets Counted

For a picket fence, enter the board width and gap to get the number of boards.

How the Counts Work

Take the total length, subtract the gate openings, and divide by the post spacing, rounding up, to get the number of sections. A straight fence needs one more post than it has sections, and each gate adds another post because it splits the run in two. Each section carries the chosen number of rails, and a picket fence needs roughly the run divided by the board width plus gap.

Because the section count is rounded up, the spacing between posts is usually a little smaller than you entered, which the calculator shows. Corners and slopes need extra care and often extra posts, and post holes, concrete, fixings and gate hardware are not counted here. Check local rules on fence height and property lines before you build.

Key Takeaways

  • Gates handled: Gate openings are removed from the run and add posts.
  • Real spacing shown: See the true post spacing after rounding.
  • Estimate: Straight runs only; add posts for corners.
