How Sunrise and Sunset Are Calculated

The tool finds where the sun is in the sky using the NOAA solar position equations. The equation of time and the sun's declination give the moment of solar noon, and the hour angle at which the sun's centre is 90.833° from the vertical (90°, plus the sun's radius and average atmospheric refraction at the horizon) gives sunrise and sunset. Civil, nautical and astronomical twilight use 6°, 12° and 18° below the horizon.

Results are accurate to about a minute at most latitudes. Near the polar circles the sun may not rise or set at all: the tool then reports a polar day or a polar night. Mountains, tall buildings and the weather change what you actually see, and local altitude shifts the times by a little. Coordinates are in decimal degrees, with north and east positive.

Key Takeaways

  • Polar cases: Reports midnight sun and polar night instead of a wrong time.
  • Change from yesterday: See how much longer or shorter the day is getting.
  • About a minute: Refraction and terrain can shift what you see.
