CSS defines 148 color keywords, from aliceblue to yellowgreen. They are case-insensitive, and the names gray, grey and their dark, dim, light and slate variants are aliases of each other. Convert a value to another notation with the Color Converter or the HEX to RGB Converter, and check text readability with the Color Contrast Checker.

Notes

  • rebeccapurple (#663399) was added in CSS Color Level 4 in memory of Rebecca Meyer; every other name comes from X11 and SVG.
  • Spelling pairs that are the same color: gray/grey, darkgray/darkgrey, darkslategray/darkslategrey, dimgray/dimgrey, lightgray/lightgrey, lightslategray/lightslategrey, slategray/slategrey, and aqua/cyan and fuchsia/magenta.
  • Two special keywords are not in the table: transparent (fully clear) and currentcolor (the element's own color).
  • The names do not always tell you how light a color is: darkgray (#a9a9a9) is lighter than gray (#808080), a quirk inherited from the X11 table. Trust the values, not the name.
  • Named colors are not accessible by name alone. Always verify the contrast ratio of the pair you use.
