Why Look at Raw Bytes
A hex dump shows the exact bytes of a file, whatever program wrote it. Developers use it to see why a file will not parse (a stray byte order mark, Windows line endings, a truncated download), to check an encoding, to inspect a binary format, and to confirm what a file really is when its extension says otherwise. In security and forensic work, the first bytes often identify the format even when the file has been renamed.
Each row starts with the offset of its first byte. The hex columns show the bytes, grouped to make long runs easier to read, and the right-hand column shows the same bytes as ASCII, with a dot for anything that is not a printable character. Zero bytes are dimmed so padding stands out. Large files are shown one page at a time, so even a file of tens of megabytes stays responsive.
