Making a Good Word Search
A word search works best when the grid is a little bigger than it needs to be, so the words have room to cross without crowding. The Automatic size picks a side from the number and length of your words; choose a larger grid for a harder puzzle or a smaller one for younger children. Words are placed longest first, and where they cross they share a letter, which makes the puzzle denser and trickier to scan.
The filler letters are chosen at random, and the tool checks that none of your words appears a second time by accident. Some things are simplified on purpose: letters are plain capitals, so accents are removed from the puzzle (the Spanish version keeps Ñ), and spaces or hyphens inside a word are dropped, so "ice cream" is hidden as ICECREAM. Words that do not fit are listed so you can make the grid larger.
