The file is built in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.
What llms.txt Is For
llms.txt is a proposed convention: a plain Markdown file at the root of a website (for example https://example.com/llms.txt) that tells language models what the site is and which pages matter most. Ordinary web pages are full of navigation, scripts and ads that waste a model’s limited context, so a short, curated list of links with one-line descriptions gives an AI assistant a cleaner starting point.
Be realistic about what it does. It is a proposal, not a web standard, and major search engines have not said that they use it for ranking. Some AI tools and developer docs platforms read it, which makes it cheap to publish for documentation and API sites. Write the summary for a reader who knows nothing about you, list only pages that are useful, keep descriptions factual, and put anything non-essential under an Optional section. Keep robots.txt for controlling crawling: llms.txt does not block or allow anything.
Key Takeaways
- Follows the proposal: The output has the same shape as the example on llmstxt.org.
- Not a ranking factor: Publishing llms.txt is optional and is not a promise of more traffic or citations.
- Related tools: Use the robots.txt Generator to control crawlers and the Markdown Previewer to preview how the file reads.
