What a Web App Manifest Does
A web app manifest is a small JSON file that tells the browser how your site should look and behave when it is installed on a phone or desktop: its name, icon, colors, the page it opens at and whether it hides the browser toolbar. Link it from every page with <link rel="manifest" href="/manifest.webmanifest">.
Chrome and other browsers offer installation when the manifest has a name, a start_url, a display mode other than browser, and icons of at least 192 and 512 pixels, and the site is served over HTTPS. A maskable icon, drawn with extra margin, lets Android crop it into a circle or rounded square without clipping the artwork. A service worker is no longer required for the install prompt in current Chrome, but you still need one if the app should work offline.
