What Each Tag Does
The title and meta description are what search engines usually show for your page, so they are your headline and pitch in the results. The canonical link says which URL is the main one when several lead to the same content. The robots tag can stop a page being indexed or limit how much of it is shown. Open Graph and Twitter Card tags control the picture, title and text of the preview when the page is shared.
Aim for titles up to about 60 characters and descriptions up to about 160, though search engines measure in pixels, not characters, and may rewrite what you provide. The meta keywords tag is ignored by the major search engines and is included only because some people still want it. Do not set noindex unless you really want a page kept out of search results.
Key Takeaways
- Escaped safely: Quotes, ampersands and angle brackets in your text are escaped so the HTML stays valid.
- Sensible defaults: Open Graph title, description and URL fall back to your page title, description and canonical.
