The 4% Rule and Your FI Number

The FIRE idea is to build a portfolio large enough that withdrawing a fixed percentage each year covers your spending. At a 4% withdrawal rate the target is 25 times your yearly spending: $40,000 a year needs $1,000,000. A lower rate, such as 3.5%, is more cautious and raises the target to about $1.14 million for the same spending.

The 4% figure comes from historical US market studies and is a guideline, not a guarantee; longer retirements, lower expected returns and market crashes early on can all call for a lower rate. Use a real return, meaning after inflation, so that everything stays in today's money. Contributions are added at the end of each year. Coast FIRE is the balance today that would compound to your FI number by retirement age even if you stopped saving.
