Your Own Plates

List only the plates in your gym, including fractional plates, and the calculator works with exactly those.

Closest Load

When your exact weight cannot be made, it shows the nearest lighter and heavier loads you can load.

Fewest Plates

It always finds the combination that uses the fewest plates, which means less changing between sets.

Private

Nothing you enter is stored or sent.

Loading a Barbell Correctly

A barbell must carry the same weight on both ends, so the plates are loaded in matching pairs. Subtract the weight of the empty bar from your target, divide by two, and that is what you need on each side. Putting the heaviest plates closest to the bar keeps the load stable and makes it quick to check at a glance.

Gyms differ in what they stock. A set of 25, 20, 15, 10, 5, 2.5 and 1.25 kg plates can make any load in 2.5 kg steps, but if your gym lacks the small plates some weights are impossible. In that case the calculator gives the closest loads either side of your target. Remember that bars differ too: a women’s bar is 15 kg or 35 lb, and some specialty bars weigh more or less than the standard 20 kg or 45 lb.

Key Takeaways

  • Exact search, not a guess: The result was checked against a brute-force search of all plate combinations.
