Choosing a Resolution
A PDF page has a size in points (1/72 inch), so the pixel size of an image is the page size in inches times the DPI. An A4 page is 8.27 by 11.69 inches, which gives about 1240 × 1754 pixels at 150 DPI and 2480 × 3508 pixels at 300 DPI. Use 72 to 100 DPI for screens and web pages, 150 DPI for good on-screen reading, and 300 DPI for printing or OCR.
Very high resolutions use a lot of memory because every page is drawn at full size before it is saved. If a page is rejected as too large, lower the DPI or convert fewer pages at a time. Password-protected PDFs must be unlocked first.
Key Takeaways
- 300 DPI for print: 72 to 150 DPI is enough for screens.
- PNG for text: Sharp edges stay sharp; use JPEG for photographic pages.
- Pick a page range: Convert only the pages you need.
