VO₂ max

VO₂ max is the maximum rate at which the body can use oxygen during hard exercise, a standard measure of aerobic fitness in mL per kg per minute.

It can be estimated from a timed run or from heart rate (maximum heart rate is roughly 220 − age). Training zones are set as percentages of heart-rate reserve: (max − rest) × intensity + rest.
