Readability Score Checker
Grade level and reading ease from six standard formulas
Six Formulas
Flesch Reading Ease, Flesch-Kincaid Grade, Gunning Fog, SMOG, Coleman-Liau and the Automated Readability Index, side by side.
Grade Level
Most formulas report a US school grade. An average of them gives a steadier estimate than any single score.
Reading Time
Estimated reading time at 238 words per minute and speaking time at 150, useful for articles and speeches.

How to Read the Scores
Flesch Reading Ease runs from 0 to 100, and higher is easier: 60 to 70 is plain English that most adults follow comfortably, while below 30 is very difficult, academic prose. The other five formulas estimate the school grade a reader needs, so 8 means roughly an eighth-grader could follow it. Short sentences and short words lower every score.
These formulas were designed for English. Syllables are estimated from vowel groups, so treat results for Spanish, French or other languages as a rough guide to sentence and word length rather than a precise grade. Very short samples are unreliable; use a few paragraphs.
Key Takeaways
- Actionable: Shorten your longest sentences and swap long words for short ones to raise readability.
- Comparable: Run drafts through repeatedly to see whether edits actually helped.
- Honest: Scores are estimates; the page flags when a formula is unreliable for your sample.
