Dead, Stuck or Hot?

A dead pixel stays black whatever colour is shown, and is most visible on white. A stuck pixel stays lit in one colour (often red, green or blue) and shows up on black and on the other primaries. A hot pixel stays white and is easiest to see on black. Dust on the screen can look like a defect, so wipe the panel first and check whether the spot moves.

Test new monitors, laptops and phones as soon as they arrive, because most shops and manufacturers only replace screens within a set return period, and many warranties allow a few faulty pixels before a panel counts as defective. On the black screen in a dark room you can also judge backlight bleed, light leaking around the edges of LCD panels.

Key Takeaways

  • White finds dead: Dead pixels show as black dots on white.
  • Black finds hot and stuck: Lit pixels stand out on black.
  • Test early: Check within the return window.
