A cup of flour and a cup of sugar do not weigh the same, and a cup of flour can differ by 20% depending on how it was scooped. Weighing is more reliable. These are typical values for a US cup (236.6 ml), the same table the Cups to Grams Converter uses; scale a whole recipe with the Recipe Scaler.

Tips

  • Spoon flour into the cup and level it; scooping with the cup packs in up to 20 % more.
  • Brown sugar is measured packed, white sugar and flour loose.
  • Treat the values as a guide: brands, humidity and fineness shift them by 10 % or more.
  • A US tablespoon is 1/16 cup (14.8 ml) and a teaspoon 1/48 cup (4.9 ml). Australian tablespoons are 20 ml.
  • For liquids close to water (milk, yogurt) a cup is about 240 g, and metric recipes use a 250 ml cup.
